The Prefect System
The Kearsney College Prefect System, when guided by clear intention and purpose, serves as a powerful platform for cultivating authentic leadership, responsibility and a spirit of service. At its best, it enables senior pupils to lead by example, serve their peers and the broader school community with humility, and embody the values and ethos of Kearsney College.
Leadership Development
Leadership, however, is not defined by a title or badge. It is a journey shaped through learning, mentorship and meaningful experience. The prefect system forms part of a broader leadership development framework that begins well before formal selection and continues beyond a pupil’s tenure.
It recognises and nurtures diverse leadership styles, including those who challenge convention, ask difficult questions and think differently. These entrepreneurial thinkers and courageous voices are not seen as non-conformists, but as essential contributors to a dynamic and evolving school community.
Leadership at Kearsney is developed both through formal structures and through the daily practice of servant leadership, responsibility and empathy.
The formal structure includes School Prefects and House Prefects, led by the Head Prefect and Deputy Head Prefect.
School Prefects serve across key portfolios including Academic, Cultural, Sport, Community Service, Spirituality, Amasiko (custodians of honourable traditions), the Kearsney College Council, Imbizo (transformational dialogue) and Dayboys.
House Prefects provide leadership within their respective boarding houses: Sheffield, Pembroke, Finningley, Gillingham and Haley.
This ensures that leadership is both representative and responsive to the life of the College.
