Growing Together at Kearsney College

Mentorship Programme

Mentorship and Leadership

At Kearsney, mentorship is embedded throughout College life, creating a strong culture of support, connection and personal growth across every year group.

Through staff-led LinkED groups and senior-junior mentorships, every boy is encouraged to build meaningful relationships within the College community. These programmes help pupils settle into College life, support their wellbeing and personal development, and create opportunities for leadership and service. Together, they strengthen the sense of belonging and brotherhood that defines the Kearsney experience.

LinkED Mentorship Programme

Every boy at the College is assigned a staff member to be their mentor. There are approximately 10 pupils in each LinkED group. The purpose is to ensure that every boy in the College has at least one adult with whom they can build a relationship. Mentors meet with their pupils every morning, where mentors have time to enquire about the wellbeing of each boy. A quick roll call is taken, announcements are made, uniforms and appearances are checked, and discussion takes place between the staff member and the boys.

LinkED Mentorship Programme

The Senior-Junior connection and pairing within the Mentorship Programme is considered an integral and vitally important part of a pupil’s life at the College. It is designed to integrate the junior boys into the life of the College and the Houses as quickly as possible. It also provides leadership opportunities for senior boys and a chance to serve the school community.

Each Housemaster carefully facilitates the pairing of Grade 8 pupils with Grade 11 pupils within their House. Grade 11s have specific responsibilities and obligations regarding the Grade 8s in Haley House. This creates an opportunity for the seniors to learn and live the values of respect and service. The Mentors within the LinkED groups will facilitate opportunities for conversations, interaction and fun activities. An important role for the Grade 11 senior is to help his Grade 8 junior settle into the College’s routine and way of life as quickly as possible and provide support and advice where necessary. At the start of the year, the College facilitates a meeting between the senior pupil and Parents/Guardians. This allows Parents and/or Guardians to meet with the seniors. This facilitates the Grade 8 boys’ transition and integration into their senior Houses.
This mentorship partnership will likely continue in their Grade 12 / Grade 9 year.

Where possible, each Grade 12 pupil fulfils a mentorship role to a Grade 9 pupil in his House. The two sign a contract, with the Housemaster as a witness.

The senior’s responsibilities to his junior are:

  • to assist with his junior’s academic, sporting and cultural endeavours;
  • to see to his general wellbeing;
  • to build a healthy relationship with his junior, based on treating him with respect and dignity, and introduce him to the Kearsney way of life, routines, procedures and traditions;
  • to write a report for his junior’s parents during the year, outlining his progress.
